  4. Overview
  5. The Lightsaver is a control panel which takes care of adjusting the system clock for you when we enter or leave Daylight Savings Time. You will never have to manually adjust the time in the control panel anymore!

The Lightsaver comes with pre-defined settings for both the European Union and the United States, but it can easily be configured to match any rule you may think of, either by using fixed dates (such as: "DST starts On April 1st and ends on October 1st") or moving dates (such as: "DST starts on the last Sunday in March and ends on the last Sunday in October").
  7. The Lightsaver is friendly to you and to your Mac: it is easy to use, it does not waste a single byte of your valuable memory, and it will not slow down your Mac. Just get used to it and you will not be able to do without it anymore...

  9. Installation

The Lightsaver works with any Macintosh (with 68020 processor or better) capable of running at least System 7.1, and is accelerated for Power Macs. If you use Mac OS 8.1 or later, you simply have to drop The Lightsaver onto the system folder icon, and reboot. If you use System 7 or Mac OS 8.0, you will also have to install Appearance Manager 1.0.2, which you will find in the "Required System Folder items". You will find detailed installation instructions in the "How to install" document.

  12. How to use it?
  13. The Lightsaver does its magic at startup time, in a fully transparent way. It checks the current date with the rules you selected, and it adjusts the clock when needed, notifying you with an alert. Apart from that, you will hardly notice that The Lightsaver is installed (unless, of course, you forget to pay your registration fee...).

You may configure The Lightsaver with a simple, easy-to-use control panel. You may choose among two pre-defined settings (one for the European Union and one for the United States), which can't be modified, and any number or user-defined settings. The user-defined settings may be modified, saved to disk and retrieved with a user interface that closely resembles the one you find in the Extensions Manager of Mac OS 8, so it will not be a surprise to many of you.

By paying your shareware fee, you will receive a unique registration code which will allow you to personalize your copy of The Lightsaver and remove the shareware reminder. When you send in your fee, don't forget to specify the name and organization to which The Lightsaver should be registered, and your e-mail address, so I can send you back your registration code.

Since cashing international cheques is very expensive, please send cash only. If you can't afford the shareware fee, you can also send me other items, such as computer magazines, books or Mac-related hardware or software. If you're starving and can't afford any of these, a simple letter, e-mail or postcard is welcome.

  57. The Lightsaver is ©1998 by Francesco Meschia. It may be freely copied and distributed, as long as it is not modified, and it cannot be included in commercial products without my prior consent.
  58. The Lightsaver may be included in on-line collections, as well as in disk or CD-ROM collections: in these last two cases, I ask you to send me a free copy of the media, or at least to notify me via e-mail.
